Just curious as to what is happening with the Type Research.

FYI: You will have the option to keep your book covers on Monday in case you need them for the review.

Any word on the lab fee? Having some more money to print exhibit stuff would ease the load...

I threw my back out so Jim will be covering for me tomorrow. He'll be there only for the first 40 minutes of class, so please be prepared to ask questions and get advice early on. Otherwise, it'll be a workday.

Grade sheet: Someone had a question regarding the grade sheet.

You rate yourself from 0 - 5 on each of the sections. You can use quarter grade increments, e.g. 2.75. The values roughly translate to the letter grades in the left.

The formula on the left has a mistake. To get your grade use this formula: ( value * 10 ) + 50 = percent. The percentages can be converted to a letter grade using the table in the syllabus.

(2.75 * 10) + 50 = 77.5%

77.5% = B-

To get your final grade, take the percentage from each section, multiply it by the percent value of each section, add then together and then divide by 100.

Note: the template file is set up as printer spreads, not reader spreads, so keep in mind that the left half of the page will actually appear on the right in the finished book, and the right page will appear overleaf. If you want to design content that spans across a spread, you'll need to manually divide it between the correct pages.
(any chance the template can be re-built as reader spreads, and imposed when we go to print?)

Reminder: As listed in the syllabus and project sheet, your report should include: audience description (easily pulled from the magazine advertiser information), industry breakdowns, 1000 word essay as a summary of trends, and charts of typeface distribution. Again, let your interest guide you when you do the research. If you sense a trend, follow it to it's logical conclusion...

About Concept:
Here's a link for the Seattle Public Library concept. It's a good example of a bottom-up approach. You start with the requirements and create a form, as opposed to top-down, where you have a particular style and fit things into it.

Typeface CD: This is the best collection I've found. Either Linotype Essentials 1 and 2 or both. (Available from http://www.linotype.com/ or http://www.myfonts.com/) I know it's still expensive, but 90% of these are actually useful, unlike other sets. Take a look at the user license - you may be able to split the cost between 5 people. Images of the included typefaces are in the downloads section.

For Wednesday: We will review what you completed for today, including: Book Covers, Revised one font layouts, New layouts with added weight. If you get bored, you can always create new variations of the recipe or make another book cover.
